Frequently asked questions
What layoff notices are, where our data comes from, and how to use the site.
What is WARN?
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act helps ensure advance notice in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs. The U.S. Department of Labor has compliance assistance materials to help workers and employers understand their rights and responsibilities under the provisions of WARN.
This Act provides "protection to workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs. Advance notice provides workers and their families some transition time to adjust to the prospective loss of employment, to seek and obtain alternative jobs, and, if necessary, to enter skill training or retraining that will allow these workers to successfully compete in the job market. WARN also provides for notice to State dislocated worker units so that dislocated worker assistance can be promptly provided."

How do you collect this data?
We spend utmost care on the data we showcase on our platform. We believe in the authenticity of procuring data from credible data sources. Our data team collects all the layoff data only from multiple US State WARN databases, by either directly contacting the respective State Departments, and/or using their publicly posted WARN notices. We also reach out to appropriate state agencies to get historic data as well.
Is this the complete list of layoffs?
No. Not all US states have a WARN act that requires public disclosure of WARN data. We are only able to collect data from states that has a public discolusre. We have still made an effort to reach out to those states for their WARN list to further our Research.
How do we compute our analytics?
It is to be noted that each US State Government has their own reporting guidelines, and formats. To maintain credible information, we only consider valid information that is published on the State WARN database. It is also to be noted that not all states provide details that would include Announcement Date and Layoff Date. Hence to arrive at annual layoff analytical values, we rely on the layoff date of each event, and if that is not available then, for such events we substitute that with the Announcement date.
From where do you collect these WARN notices?
We collect our layoff data from publicly available WARN data sites published by the respective US State department of labor websites. The links to the respective US State WARN data sources are mentioned below:
